Are YOU alright? - Sense Checking 101

Leaders need to be constantly testing how people are responding to them and adjusting their style depending on the response.

E.g.
Rob says loud, clear and confidently, "Hi Karen, are you alright?"
Karen replies, "Yes".
*pause*
Karen questions, "Are you?".
*Rob engages Karen eye to eye and closes the distance between them*
Rob begins, "how is the project with the FLT's going?"
*Karen begins a long winded answer of excuses avoiding the direct answer*

Thanks to rob's sense check he uncovered that Karen was having trouble with her project. Because he begun communication and followed up, he now had an opportunity to deal with Karen's objection, limiting beliefs, etc... Rob assisted Karen in seeing that it was possible to get around the issue at hand, and Karen thanked Rob. Or she despised rob because she was lazy...

Always open the lines of communication in a targeted and controlled manner but be aware of those who can bluff. Blast through excuses.
